Asia Cup 2025 Tensions: Suryakumar Yadav Refuses Trophy From PCB Chief As Pakistan Attends Training Amidst Diplomatic Uncertainty

The Asia Cup 2025 has entered a high-tension phase following the no-handshake controversy between India and Pakistan, with both teams and cricket authorities navigating an uncertain path. India captain Suryakumar Yadav has taken a firm stance, making it clear that he will not accept the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi if India emerges victorious. This demand has reportedly been communicated to the ACC as the tournament continues in Dubai.

The dispute stems from the no-handshake incident during India vs. Pakistan, which escalated into a diplomatic and political controversy. Pakistan had even threatened to pull out of the tournament, prompting interventions from both the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the ACC. While some of the PCB's earlier requests, such as replacing match official Andy Pycroft for Pakistan vs. UAE, were accommodated with Ritchie Richardson stepping in, other apprehensions remain unresolved.

Despite the ongoing tensions and awaiting Islamabad’s final clearance, the Pakistan team demonstrated its commitment to continue in the tournament by showing up for a training session at the ICC Academy in Dubai. The session was held even as the Indian team, including Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir, were still completing their practice. Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha and his teammates maintained good spirits, greeting the UAE players and engaging in friendly interactions, while avoiding the Indian nets altogether.

Sources indicate that Mohsin Naqvi is expected to announce Pakistan's continued participation formally, though some conditions and concerns are yet to be fully addressed. The PCB insists that such decisions, especially those regarding protocols and trophy presentations, be finalized in advance to prevent any on-field embarrassment later in the tournament.

With both teams taking firm positions and cricket authorities attempting to mediate, the Asia Cup continues under a cloud of uncertainty. How these tensions will affect the remainder of the tournament remains a critical watchpoint for fans and officials alike.
