Actress Mohini Opens Up: Forced Intimate Scenes, Missed Roles, and Life Beyond Cinema
In the glittering world of 1990s South Indian cinema, actress Mohini was a shining star, captivating audiences with her versatility, charm, and unforgettable performances. From Malayalam to Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and even Hindi films, she shared screens with legendary actors like Sivaji Ganesan, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Chiranjeevi, and Rajinikanth.
But behind the glamour and applause, Mohini faced challenges that few knew about. From being pressured into intimate scenes she was uncomfortable with, to missing iconic roles in blockbusters, her journey was anything but easy. In this post, we dive deep into Mohini’s candid revelations about her career, the difficult choices she made, and the life she has built beyond the silver screen.
The Rise of a 90s Star
In the 1990s, actress Mohini was one of the most popular faces of South Indian cinema. Known for her striking looks and versatile performances, she worked across Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and even Hindi films. From rural dramas to urban romances, she brought authenticity to her characters, winning the admiration of audiences and filmmakers alike.
Mohini shared screens with industry giants such as Sivaji Ganesan, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Chiranjeevi, Vijayakanth, Balakrishna, and Vikram. With movies like Aditya 369, Hitler, Naadody, Oru Maravathoor Kanavu, and Sainyam, she became a household name, remembered even today despite having stepped away from films more than a decade ago.
“I Was Forced to Do That Scene” – Mohini on Kanmani
In a recent interview with Aval Vikatan, Mohini revisited one of the most difficult experiences of her career. She recalled being pressured into performing intimate scenes for the 1994 Tamil film Kanmani, directed by RK Selvamani.
“Director RK Selvamani planned this swimming suit sequence. I was so uncomfortable, I cried and refused to do it, and the shooting was halted for half a day,” she revealed. “I didn’t even know how to swim! Back then, female instructors were practically nonexistent, and I couldn’t imagine doing it in front of male trainers. It felt like I was forced into the sequence for the song Udal Thazhuva.”
Although she eventually gave in, Mohini later refused when asked to repeat the same sequence in Ooty. “They said the shoot would not continue, and I replied, ‘That is your problem, not mine.’ So Kanmani became the only film where I appeared overly glamorous without my consent. Sometimes things happen against one’s will, and this was one such instance.”
The Roles That Slipped Away
Despite her talent, Mohini missed out on some of the most iconic roles of the era. She revealed that the role played by Simran in Vaaranam Aayiram was first offered to her. “When I turned it down, my younger brother’s wife, who was a fan of Suriya, was upset. I told her, ‘Even if I did the film, it’s me acting with Suriya, not you,’” Mohini recalled with a smile.
Another near miss was Muthu, one of Rajinikanth’s most beloved blockbusters. Until the last moment, the heroine’s role was between her and Meena. “They asked if I would meet them, but I wasn’t willing. If something is meant for us, it will come. There was a whole night of discussions, but when they chose Meena, I felt relaxed. God had something else in store for me.”
She also lost out on Chinna Thambi due to a date clash, showing how fate and timing often shaped her career choices.
Faith, Family, and a New Life
After marriage, Mohini gradually stepped away from the spotlight. Her personal life, however, made headlines when she converted to Christianity. Opening up about the decision, she said her faith came during one of her darkest phases.
“All I could think about was dying. My condition was caused by black magic performed by a relative. It was my faith in Jesus that saved me,” she said. With the support of her family, Mohini embraced a life away from films and now lives abroad with her husband and two children.
A Star Fans Still Remember
Though her last screen appearance was in the 2011 Malayalam political thriller Collector, Mohini continues to be remembered fondly by fans. Her story is not just about stardom but also about resilience, courage, and choosing personal peace over the glitz of cinema.
Even after all these years, her honesty about the challenges of the film industry sheds light on the pressures many actresses faced behind the glamour of the 90s silver screen.
