Shwetha Menon Creates History as AMMA’s First Woman President
In a landmark moment for Malayalam cinema, actor Shwetha Menon has been elected as the first-ever woman President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Her journey to this milestone was not just about breaking a glass ceiling, but also about battling stereotypes, legal hurdles, and systemic barriers that have long defined the industry.
The Journey to Leadership
Menon’s victory comes at a crucial time, as the Malayalam film industry reflects on the findings of the Hema Committee Report, which shed light on deep-rooted issues of gender inequality and unsafe working environments. Even before her election, she faced challenges, including a bizarre court case questioning her past films. But with resilience and support from her family and colleagues, she stood firm. “More the enemies, the more I excel,” she remarked, turning adversity into strength.
A Symbol of Change
For decades, AMMA has been led by stalwarts like Mohanlal and Mammootty. Today, Menon’s election symbolizes a new chapter. “AMMA is now a woman,” she proudly says, highlighting the importance of compassion, patience, and resilience in leadership. With more women now in key positions, the organization aims to transform not just its policies but also its culture.
Focusing on Safe Working Spaces
One of her first priorities is ensuring safe and respectful workplaces for artists, particularly women. She recalls how basic facilities like make-up vans and proper changing rooms were once absent. “We have come a long way. Under my leadership, these complaints will not arise,” she assures. Fixed working hours, especially for women and new mothers, are also part of her vision—something she personally practiced during her pregnancies while working on films.
The Power of Communication
For Menon, change begins with dialogue. She emphasizes that many issues in the industry stem from lack of communication. “It’s a matter of communication. I used to urge people to come and talk about their problems. But not everyone feels confident to speak up. My aim is to build a culture where no one fears raising their voice.”
Content Above All
Beyond leadership, Menon remains passionate about cinema. She strongly believes in content-driven films, rather than those defined by gender. “A movie is not about a man or a woman—it’s about the story.” Her past hits like Salt and Pepper continue to be celebrated, and with Lokah, Malayalam cinema’s first female superhero film, she sees hope for more inclusive narratives. Yet, she acknowledges the industry reality: “Even ‘Lokah’ is backed by a man. We still need allies to bring more such gems forward.”
Trials, Triumphs, and Personal Journey
Menon’s career has been as diverse as it has been inspiring. From being Aishwarya Rai’s roommate during the 1994 Miss India pageant, to winning accolades in Malayalam cinema, to experimenting with Bollywood and television, she has never been confined to one path. “I love to keep experimenting and want to explore new avenues,” she says, reflecting her never-settle spirit.
Looking Ahead
Balancing her artistic journey with her new responsibilities at AMMA is no small task. Yet, Menon approaches it with clarity: “For me, it’s about work-work balance.” With support from veterans like Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Suresh Gopi, and encouragement from younger artists, she is confident of steering AMMA towards greater transparency, accountability, and inclusivity.
As she steps into this new chapter, Shwetha Menon is more than just AMMA’s president—she is a changemaker, setting the stage for safer spaces, gender parity, and content-first cinema in Kerala’s most celebrated industry.
