Mastiii 4 Review: A Nostalgic Franchise That Lost Its Laughs

Nearly two decades after Masti earned its place as a breezy, mischievous entertainer, Mastiii 4 arrives with the burden of nostalgia and the hope of reviving a once-popular adult-comedy brand. Instead, it becomes a reminder of why some franchises should be allowed to rest in peace. With Milap Zaveri at the helm, Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani, and Vivek Oberoi reprise their roles in a world where jokes fall flat, chaos replaces humour, and desperation masquerades as comedy.

Mastiii 4 Review

The Premise

The film follows Amar, Meet and Prem—three married men living in the UK trapped in repetitive, unhappy routines. Things change when they meet Kamraj (Arshad Warsi), whose wife Menaka (Nargis Fakhri) has granted him a bizarre annual pass called a “Love Visa” — a week of complete "freedom." Fascinated, the trio attempt to negotiate similar permissions from their wives, leading to misunderstandings, suspicion, and a confusing chain of farcical events.

Where It Stumbles

The biggest issue with Mastiii 4 is simple: the comedy does not work. Jokes rarely land and often dissolve into awkward silence; crude humour substitutes for actual wit; and several scenes cross into tastelessness. Editing is choppy, pacing nosedives after the interval, and the screenplay recycles outdated gags. The pre-climax twist feels like a last-minute attempt to rescue sinking material.

Performances

Riteish Deshmukh tries the hardest, showing flashes of sincerity despite the weak material. Aftab Shivdasani understands the franchise’s tone best, while Vivek Oberoi often shifts from exaggerated to exhausting. Supporting players, including Tusshar Kapoor and Arshad Warsi, offer cameo moments but are never given enough to work with. The female characters are regrettably underwritten and largely reduced to props.

Technical Aspects

Technically, the film is a patchwork: passable cinematography, loud sound design that attempts to force laughs, and colour grading that tries to mask cheapness. Editing is abrupt and transitions are jarring. A few locations and musical cues provide brief relief, but they cannot elevate the weak core.

What (If Anything) Works

Aftab’s controlled turns and Riteish’s commitment are small bright spots. A handful of sequences in the second half offer mild amusement, and a cameo by Genelia Deshmukh briefly refreshes the tone. Small sparks, however, are not enough to salvage the film.

Final Verdict

Mastiii 4 is not outrageous enough to be fun, not bold enough to count as adult comedy, and not funny enough to be a comedy. It collapses under weak writing, tired jokes, confused editing, and direction that fails to revive the essence of the original Masti films. A disappointing, unnecessary sequel that marks a definitive end for the franchise.
