Dhanashree Verma Opens Up: Marriage, Betrayal, and Moving On After Yuzvendra Chahal
When choreographer and digital creator Dhanashree Verma tied the knot with Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal in December 2020, their love story seemed like a fairytale born in lockdown. What began as online dance lessons during the Covid-19 pandemic quickly blossomed into a romance, culminating in a grand wedding in Gurugram. But behind the smiles and social media-perfect moments, cracks had already begun to show.
A Shocking Confession on National Television
Currently a contestant on the reality show Rise and Fall, Dhanashree has been candid about her past relationship. In a recent episode, during a casual breakfast chat with actor Kubbra Sait, she made a startling revelation that stunned viewers and her co-contestant alike.
“When did you realise in your relationship that this can’t go on, that it was a mistake?” Kubbra asked.
Without hesitation, Dhanashree replied: “First year. Caught him in the second month.”
Kubbra’s shocked reaction — “Crazy bro” — echoed what many fans felt when the clip went viral on social media.
The Emotional Weight of Divorce
By mid-2022, the couple had already separated, and in February 2025, they jointly filed for divorce by mutual consent. The final verdict came in March 2025, legally ending their marriage after three years.
In a podcast with Humans of Bombay, Dhanashree shared how overwhelming the courtroom moment was:
“Even though we were so well-prepared mentally, I got so emotional. I started howling in front of everybody. I couldn’t even express what I was feeling at that point. He (Chahal) walked out first.”
She also clarified ongoing speculation about alimony, stressing that the process was mutual and respectful: “It happened quickly because it was mutual. That’s why when people say alimony, it’s wrong. My parents have taught me to only justify to people whom I care about. Why waste time explaining to those who don’t even know you?”
Respect, Responsibility, and Trolls
On Rise and Fall, Dhanashree also reflected on how she navigated the responsibility of being in a public marriage: “When you’re in a marriage, you’re responsible for the other person too. Their respect is also your responsibility. I could have been disrespectful too — you think I don’t have things to say as a woman? But he was my husband, and I respected that bond.”
She admitted facing trolling and criticism but urged that one’s work should speak louder than attempts to bring others down.
Life Beyond Marriage
While the marriage ended, Dhanashree’s focus has shifted to her career and personal growth. A popular choreographer, dancer, and digital creator, she continues to inspire through her YouTube dance videos and television appearances. She was also a finalist on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 11 and is now preparing for her Telugu film debut with the dance-based movie Akasam Daati Vastaava.
As she embraces new beginnings, her journey reflects resilience — a reminder that even after heartbreak, there can be strength, self-discovery, and hope for the future.
