Karur Stampede: Vijay Speaks Out, Questions CM Stalin as TN Government Counters Allegations
The tragic Karur stampede, which claimed the lives of 41 people, has sparked intense debate across Tamil Nadu’s political spectrum. TVK chief and actor Vijay broke his silence, expressing grief, questioning the state government’s actions, and challenging Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the aftermath of the incident.
Vijay’s Heartfelt Message
In a sombre video message released three days after the tragedy, Vijay conveyed his deep sorrow:
“I have never faced such a painful situation in my life. The only pain in my heart is pain itself.”
He explained that throughout his tour, the safety of people was his top priority, stating that he had carefully requested police approval for 10 venues and had ensured that measures were in place. Despite these precautions, the tragedy occurred.
Vijay also expressed his desire to visit Karur and meet the survivors, emphasizing support for the injured and gratitude toward those who offered help:

Allegations Against the Government
Vijay’s video also questioned the FIR filed against TVK leaders, asking whether the Chief Minister was seeking revenge:
“CM sir, if you want to take revenge, please do it with me. Please spare my supporters and fans. I will be here at home or at the office.”
He suggested a possible conspiracy behind the stampede, noting that similar rallies in other districts over the past two weeks had passed without incident, and that this tragedy occurred only in Karur.
Vijay thanked political leaders across parties, including Rahul Gandhi, Edappadi K Palaniswami, and K Annamalai, for their support and reaffirmed that TVK’s political journey would continue stronger and braver.
Tamil Nadu Government Responds
The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government countered Vijay’s statements, releasing video footage during a press conference showing TVK cadres allegedly breaking police cordons during the stampede. Officials claimed the venue was unsuitable due to a nearby petrol bunk and drainage canal, and alleged that crowd numbers surged unexpectedly, from 12,000 to over 25,000 attendees, leading to chaos.
Authorities further explained that police instructions to halt the procession were ignored, causing crowd surges near sensitive areas like an electricity generator enclosure, compounded by power failures.
Political Reactions and Investigations
The incident drew national attention, with an eight-member NDA delegation led by BJP MP Hema Malini visiting Karur for a fact-finding mission. Malini criticized the choice of venue and the power outage during the rally, calling it suspicious.
