Box Office Battle Alert: Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari vs Kantara – What’s Happening Behind the Scenes
October 2, 2025, is shaping up to be one of the most exciting weekends at the Indian box office, as Bollywood rom-com Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari collides with Kannada epic Kantara: Chapter 1. While both films promise entertainment, the lead-up to their release has already sparked discussions, clashes, and some strong demands from distributors.
Kantara’s Demands Shake Up Exhibitors
With less than a week left for their release, the makers of Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 have set unusual demands for exhibitors. According to sources, AA Films, the distributors, sent emails asking that single-screen, two-screen, and even three-screen theatres showcase 100% of Kantara’s shows, leaving no room for other films, including Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari.
The breakdown reportedly included:
- 12 shows in two-screen cinemas (all shows)
- 18 shows in three-screen multiplexes (all shows)
- 21–54 shows in four- to ten-screen theatres
- 100% shows in IMAX properties
A theatre exhibitor shared their concerns anonymously, “We understand that Kantara is highly anticipated. But Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is also a family entertainer. We hope the makers of Kantara understand our dilemma and find a solution.”
Varun Dhawan on the Clash: Respectful but Confident
While numbers and demands make headlines, Varun Dhawan, the lead of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, remains confident. Speaking to India Today and at the India Today Conclave 2025, he addressed the box office clash with grace.
“Honestly, while setting the release date, Dharma Productions picked October 2 because it’s both Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti. The business on this day will be much bigger than a normal Friday — almost Rs 70 crore worth of business is expected in Hindi alone,” Varun said.
Acknowledging Kantara’s success, he added, “Obviously, Kantara is a very big film. The first one was amazing. I loved it myself. But our film is very different. I think there’s more than enough space for all kinds of films.”
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari: A Feel-Good Rom-Com
Directed by Shashank Khaitan, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a family-friendly rom-com featuring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf. The story follows Sunny and Tulsi as they team up to make their exes jealous, creating playful and heartwarming moments along the way.
Varun emphasized the film’s intent: “Our trailer has received a very good response, especially from family audiences. We want people to laugh, have fun, and feel happy. In life, people are already so serious and stressed about finances and the law, so this film is about giving them joy.”
Kantara Chapter 1: The Kannada Epic
Produced by Hombale Films, Kantara: Chapter 1 explores the ancient origins of the Bhoota Kola tradition. Co-written by Rishab Shetty, Anirudh Mahesh, and Shanil Guru, the film stars Rishab Shetty, Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Deviah. Riding on the cult success of its predecessor, the film is highly anticipated and backed by strong distributor demands to dominate theatres.
The Box Office Showdown
With both films targeting family audiences and youth, October 2 is set to witness a thrilling box office battle. While Kantara brings the weight of a Kannada epic, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari promises laughter, romance, and feel-good entertainment. The coming weekend will reveal whether exhibitors can balance both films and how audiences respond to this cinematic clash.
